Blunt Instrument: LP
As much as I love this band, I was still surprised at how much I liked this album. It’s less frantic than the first one, We Are Being Observed, but that doesn’t detract from the music. Where the early stuff just ran for the finish line, Blunt Instrument takes its time and fleshes out some really great melodies, and also eliminates most of the Minutemen comparisons. There’s a Jam-like ring to the guitar, and it’s almost poppy. And they write great lyrics, to boot. It’s self-released with hand-screened LP covers. Best record I’ve heard so far this year. –Josh (Mistake)
