Artcore’s a long-running labor of love out of England. Welly is unique in the sense that he’s an older guy who combines reverent looks at the past with a healthy love for the present state of underground punk rock, when the most common stance is that everything used to be better and new bands aren’t doing anything original. For that alone, my hat’s off to the guy. He’s also among the dwindling number of people who haven’t “moved on” from punk rock to something else, as evidenced by his fine taste in current bands: Fucked Up, Vitamin X, and Signal Lost, among others. My favorite part is usually the articles about bands that would otherwise be lost to history, bands like Social Unrest or Negazione that might not have gotten covered in the Trouser Press Record Guide and are therefore harder to dig up information about. He’s also got a sense of humor about the whole thing and a great eye for layout. The only caveat would be that the text is a bit small, which might bother some people. But all in all, good stuff. –Josh (Welly, 1 Aberdulais Rd., Gabalfa, Cardiff, CF14 2PH, Wales, UK)
