White Stripes
12/8/00 at Spaceland

Just last summer the Detroit duo of Jack and Meg White played a few LA area shows without much fanfare in front of a lucky handful. Their biggest crowd was here at Spaceland but was incidental since 99.9% of the crowd was there to see Weezer play under a phony name. Things change. Just six months later and the line leading into the club for tonight's show stretched out on to the sidewalk along Silver Lake Blvd. The bill was doubtless bolstered by the presence of the Bellrays and Flash Express but something must have kept the people outside waiting 'till the end of the Bellrays' set. And that something, of course, was buzz on the White Stripes who left quite an impression on the lucky few who saw them last time around. This time the Stripes opened with a cover of Iggy's "I'm Bored" that seemed suited for their stripped down style of rocking. With a mysterious paper-covered guitar, Jack and his "sister" (Lover? Ex-wife? Whatever!) played a stunning set culled from the two White Stripes Sympathy CDs that ran the gamut of what they do: from the garage rock playfulness of "Hello Operator" to the Kinks- style pop of "Apple Blossom," the audience hung on to every note and syllable the singer plucked and uttered. About the only thing that made it a less than perfect set was the absence of Meg White's candy-colored drum kit since she was borrowing a kit from the Bellrays that night. Rumors of major label interest have surfaced since then, so catch them in an intimate setting while you can.
