Consumer Prisoners

By Harvey Wallbanger

The prison population continues to grow with the help of tough three strike and drug laws. As the prison population grows, however, so does its disturbing propensity to look like a separate and complete nation apart from the rest of the United States. The New York Times reported on Monday, May 14th on the growing consumer goods market inside US prisons. Koss Headphones does over 1 million dollars in business to prisons. Zenith Electronics makes a television just for the prison market. According to prison industry suppliers this is an extremely lucrative business. Tom Thomas president of Union Supply, a supplier to prisons, said the prison market was hard to crack, but, "considering the [growing] demographics, it's worth it." A short article about Union Supply written by a prisoner is available here: http://www.prisoners.com/uniongyp.html
