As a teen, East Los Angeles native Rebecca Rodriguez participated in the Eastside’s infamous 1980s backyard hardcore punk scene. Unlike East L.A.’s venerated first wave of punk bands, this second major wave of East L.A. punk has largely been ignored and dismissed almost from its inception. The scene was built from the ground up from whatever resources were available and with zero interest from the press, music labels, and club owners.

Inspired by punk’s DIY ethos, Rodriguez contributed to the party by photographing some of the many bands scratching for fleeting moments of “stage” time, and the local punks who made the scene happen in assorted yards, porches, living rooms and vacant lots. The bulk of the photos presented in this exhibition, taken at various Eastside locations during 1988-91, have never been publicly exhibited or published.

In them, Rodriguez captures the energy and the excitement of the scene at its apex, when crowds could be found raising hell in packed backyards across the Eastside on any given weekend. They also offer both a fleeting glimpse of some of the seeds that blossomed into the “Chicano Groove” scene of the mid-1990s, and of the early days of a scene that has since seen multiple waves of punk bands move through the backyards and is just beginning to receive any attention from academics and L.A. punk aficionados.

Rebecca is a Razorcake contributor. Please come out and support her first solo photo show.
